Because in the pre-season they'd be playing against 3rd string or worse defensive players so what's the point? The pre-season at that point is to see who makes the team, not to get in-game practice. In the season they're still playing against the real defense and are playing a "real" in-game situation which will help them improve for later in the year.

I might be willing to give you Peyton if all he was doing was handing the ball off (I wasn't watching), but there's no way benching Eli, or Mathis, is better than giving them more real-game practice all for the sake of a miniscule chance of injury. Like I said, if you want to argue giving the backups in-game practice is more valuable, fine, but benching them to prevent injury just doesn't make sense.

...and they take Brady out for the last play of the game. Makes no sense.

In the 4th Qtr, Tenn looked like they had more urgency to score than Jax.

Here is the explanation on Johnson, although it still doesn't explain why the backup wasn't in

CJ was obv trying to pad his stats. He's oft-quoted regarding his affinity for rushing yards stats.

I think I also heard him quoted in preseason guaranteeing he would be the best fantasy player in the league or something similar. Made my decision with #1 pick in the draft easy :-)
